چکیده

This study investigates the long-term tendency in ratio of rapid intensification (RI) cases to total number tropical cyclone over western North Pacific (WNP) during June between 1982 and 2021. There is a significant decreasing trend RI June, which opposite increasing July–November. From 1982–2005 2006–2021, significantly decreases region 5°–20°N 120°–150°N, while showing weak changes other parts WNP. Over with reduction, reduced 850-hPa relative vorticity 200-hPa divergence enhanced 850 vertical wind shear are likely primary drivers. The RI-suppressing effect above dynamical variables exceeds RI-favoring warming ocean, for example, increased sea surface temperature heat potential, this same region. Moreover, dynamic conditions can be related an anomalous low-level anticyclonic circulation, upper-level convergent flow greater enhancement easterlies than lower-level easterlies. Our highlights importance (e.g., shear) modulating WNP activity.

A Revised Tropical Cyclone Rapid Intensification Index for the Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific Basins

A revised rapid intensity index (RII) is developed for the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific basins. The RII uses large-scale predictors from the Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) to estimate the probability of rapid intensification (RI) over the succeeding 24 h utilizing linear discriminant analysis. Separate versions of the RII are developed for the 25-, 30-, and 35-k...

Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Intensity and ENSO

The influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on tropical cyclone intensity in the western North Pacific basin is examined. Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE), constructed from the best-track dataset for the region for the period 1950–2002, and other related variables are analyzed. ACE is positively correlated with ENSO indices. This and other statistics of the interannually varying tr...

Rapid intensification and the bimodal distribution of tropical cyclone intensity

The severity of a tropical cyclone (TC) is often summarized by its lifetime maximum intensity (LMI), and the climatological LMI distribution is a fundamental feature of the climate system. The distinctive bimodality of the LMI distribution means that major storms (LMI >96 kt) are not very rare compared with less intense storms. Rapid intensification (RI) is the dramatic strengthening of a TC in...

Dynamical Control of Rapid Tropical Cyclone Intensification by Environmental Shears

Improve our understanding of the physical processes by which (a) 3-D environmental shears, in particular the low-level meridional shear and upper-level vertical shear affect inner core structure and intensity, and (b) the mesoscale vortices, outer spiral rainbands, inner spiral rainbands, and the eyewall interact and affect TC development and intensity change. General questions to be addressed ...

Forced and internal variability of tropical cyclone track density in 1 the western North Pacific

6 Forced interannual-to-decadal variability of annual tropical cyclone (TC) track density in 7 the western North Pacific between 1979-2008 is studied using TC tracks from observations 8 and simulations by a 25-km-resolution version of the GFDL High-Resolution Atmospheric 9 Model (HiRAM) that is forced by observed sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Two modes 10 dominate the decadal variability: a ...
